For visitors
Welcome to Pyhäjoki
Since you’ve already come this far, these places are worth experiencing:
The nature and atmosphere of the river delta
Koskipuisto - Hourunkoski (rapids park)
From the southern bank of the northern branch of the Pyhäjoki River, Koskipuisto (Rapids Park) offers views of the Hourunkoski rapids. The park’s paths are also accessible for people with reduced mobility. On the northern bank of the river, you can enjoy a picnic—perhaps at a lean-to shelter—accompanied by the sound of rushing rapids.
Address: Niskantie 17, 86100 Pyhäjoki, Finland.
Saaren penkkatie (embankment road)
The Saaren Penkkatie embankment road runs, as its name suggests, on an island between the southern and northern branches of the Pyhäjoki River. The embankment roads in Pyhäjoki were built in the 1950s to protect the low-lying riverbank areas from flooding. In addition to flood protection, they serve as excellent recreational routes for both walking and cycling. Stop at a rest area for a picnic and enjoy the changing seasons from a perfect vantage point.
Address: Kokkolantie 90 or Niskantie 15, 86100 Pyhäjoki, Finland.
Kielosaari Nature Trail
From Kielosaari, a charming 600-meter nature trail begins, introducing visitors to the diverse river landscape. Small bridges lead from one island to another, and boardwalks take you all the way to a small birdwatching tower and a campfire site. Take a break on the benches along the trail or on the water-smoothed rocks to listen to the gentle lapping of the river and enjoy the scenery.
Address: Vanhatie 73, 86100 Pyhäjoki, Finland.
Echoes of the past
Etelänkylän Isosilta (a wooden bridge)
Etelänkylä Isosilta Bridge is the oldest wooden bridge in Finland still in use for traffic. In 1982, it was “declared” a museum bridge. Completed in 1837, the bridge is a timber truss structure consisting of four spans. At 77 metres in length, it creates a historic and impressive view over the rapids landscape of the southern mouth of the Pyhäjoki River.
Address: Vanhatie 75 or Eteläkyläntie 42, 86100 Pyhäjoki, Finland.
Annala Local Heritage Museum
The Annala Local Heritage Museum area features 22 buildings and around 8,000 artefacts illustrating life in the past, before the era of tractors. The museum project began with items from the museum section of the 1957 parish exhibition held in Pyhäjoki. It became reality in 1963, when the Annala Local Heritage Museum was opened to the public.
Address: Annalantie 20, 86100 Pyhäjoki, Finland.
