Pauha-Maijas ja Pauha-Mattis

The Education Board chooses the Pauha-Maija or Pauha-Matti. The publication happens at the homestead celebration at Annala on the first Sunday of July.

The factors taken into consideration when choosing Pauha-Maija and Pauha-Matti are e.g. if the person has done voluntary work for a long time, is still active culturally, lives in Pyhäjoki and brings recognition to his/her home town. The residents can make suggestions on the next Pauha-Maija and Pauha-Matti e.g. through emails around the year.

Pauha is an old saying from Pyhäjoki. It's a Baltic Herring Shallow, an underground range of rocks, where the waves are at their worst during a storm. Pauha was visited with a Pauha Boat and from there were gathered the greatest catches. The word Pauha can be often found from Pyhäjoki, for example, Pauhasali (hall) at the high school, the Pauhalla-statue in front of the town hall, and of course, Pauha-Maija and Pauha-Matti.

Pauha-Maija tai Pauha-Matti saa kotiseutujuhlassa tunnustukseksi pyhäjokislähtöisen Anja Kantorin s. Pihlajamaan suunnitteleman ja toteuttaman kansallispukuisen keramiikkanuken.

Pauha-Maija or Pauha-Matti receives a recognized ceramic doll Anja Kantori dressed in a national costume, originating from Pyhäjoki, designed and made by Pihlajamaa.
